Support for RUSI’s Re-Invent Program

Client Overview:

RUSI (Royal United Services Institute) is a renowned defence and security think tank based in the UK.

Challenge:

RUSI needed to understand the threat of Al-Shabaab terrorism in the context of the Kenyan elections, as part of the larger Re-Invent program funded by the UK FCDO.

Solution: Grey Dynamics provided comprehensive support through:

  1. Conducting detailed research and open-source analysis.
  2. Facilitating access to human interviewees.
  3. Conducting on-the-ground interviews to gather firsthand insights.
  4. Performing a data-focused survey on attacks, influence, propaganda, and operations of Al-Shabaab.

Implementation

  1. Grey Dynamics started with extensive open-source research to gather preliminary data.
  2. Identified and reached out to key human interviewees with relevant insights.
  3. Conducted thorough interviews on the ground to obtain detailed information.
  4. Compiled and analysed the data to determine the influence of Al-Shabaab on the Kenyan elections.
  5. Conducted a data-focused survey and provided a monthly incident intelligence report to RUSI, which included analysis of discriminant and indiscriminate attacks, as well as law enforcement responses.
  6. Fed the findings into the broader Re-Invent program.

Results: The research found no influence from Al-Shabaab on the Kenyan elections, according to the human interviewees. The data-focused survey provided valuable insights into Al-Shabaab’s attacks, influence, propaganda, and operations. This positive outcome significantly enhanced the Re-Invent program’s understanding and strategic approach.
