Background

Italy’s geographical position in the Mediterranean region is a strategic gateway to Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. This gives Italy a platform to influence regional issues, such as trade, migration, and security. In 2015, the Italian Defense Ministry outlined its growing strategic ambition to have a central role in the economic and military affairs of the Mediterranean Sea. Since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, Italy has reaffirmed its commitment to stabilising the region and strengthening its own military capabilities. [Source]
