Italy’s geographical position in the Mediterranean region is a strategic gateway to Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. This gives Italy a platform to influence regional issues, such as trade, migration, and security. In 2015, the Italian Defense Ministry outlined its growing strategic ambition to have a central role in the economic and military affairs of the Mediterranean Sea.
