Violence is Denying the Sahel a Green Future

Energy development in the Liptako-Gourma region of the Sahel, encompassing Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso is largely underdeveloped due to the ongoing instability due to violence. The region holds the largest potential for renewable energy, even as 51% of the population is without access to electricity. However, ongoing violence, political instability, and lack of international funding will challenge efforts to bring renewable energy to the Liptako-Gourma.

Key Judgement 1: Niger’s energy development and security will likely worsen over the next 6 months due to ongoing sanctions and a lack of international funding for energy development projects.

Key Judgement 2: Burkina Faso is likely to promote energy independence and develop relations with Russia for advanced energy supplies over the next 6 months.

Key Judgement 3: It is unlikely that Mali’s energy development will improve so long as it lacks foreign investment and faces terrorist and rebel attacks.
