3D Printed Guns: Religious and Political Extremists’ New Go-To?

Incidents in 2025 of Islamic extremists’ interest in 3D printing suggest a recent trend in preferences of bad actors for acquiring both weapons and other operational tools, and we expect incidents to continue appearing in 2026. Similarly, 2025 saw right-wing extremists exploring 3D printing to acquire firearms, and we do not see indications of any change in the trajectory of this trend. Industry and government entities are undertaking initiatives to counter bad actors’ use of 3D printing technology to acquire weapons, but their effectiveness remains unclear.
