    Moroccan Sand Mafias: An Analysis

    Morocco is dealing with a form of organised crime that is often not discussed. Sand Mafias have plagued the North African country, especially since the easing of COVID-19 measures. Tourism and construction industries have struggled to rebound from COVID-19.

    Challenges like these have made way for organised networks to illegally collect the sand from Morocco’s coastline. Networks like these sell it to construction projects where sand is a crucial ingredient for concrete. As a result, Morocco has an increasingly corrupt society and a destroyed coastline which threatens both the environment and tourism.
