Terrorism in Ghana: A 6-month Outlook

The Global Terrorism Index currently ranks Ghana at 89, making it safer than many European countries. However, its proximity to the Sahel, a region which suffers from terrorism, makes the country vulnerable to increased terrorist threats in the near term. Additionally, Ghana’s coastal neighbours Togo and Benin have both experienced high numbers of attacks and casualties from Jihadist groups (source, source, source).

External reports and Ghanaian officials warned about increased JNIM and Al-Qaeda activities and recruitment efforts in Ghana’s northernmost regions. With the upcoming Ghanaian General Elections on 7th December 2024, concerns about possible terrorist attacks remain high (source, source, source).
