Arctic Forecast 2025: Sweden

Executive Summary

Sweden will enter the next year with a committed policy towards increased defense in the Arctic, aimed at countering the threat posed by Russia and China. Among the measures taken by the prime minister and the defense chief are an increase in the annual defense budget and an expansion of military assets in the northern regions.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the Nordic Defense Cooperation (NORDEFCO) will play a key part in Sweden’s Arctic calculus in the coming months. Sweden aims to boost security cooperation with its allies. This will take the form of operational exercises and cross-border logistics in the interest of regional security.
