Armenian Defence: A Surge in Capabilities and Procurement

Armenian defence capabilities are subject to a new campaign striving towards an increase through several means. This includes signing multiple agreements with foreign countries in order to procure advanced weapons systems such as the French CAESAR self-propelled howitzer. It has also included Armenia signing defence agreements with the UK, USA and France in order to develop Armenian defence capabilities through training of its military and the posting of military attachés. Amidst a souring of relations with Russia, Armenia has also begun developing its own Military Industrial Complex (MIC) through several means which includes statements by Armenian government ministers that it “possesses the potential” for developing and producing its own Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs).

Key Judgment 1. It is highly likely that outside countries will increasingly develop Armenian defence capabilities through the sale of advanced weapons systems.
