Beijing Cyber Ops Target Taiwan Chip Industry to Erode Influence

Executive Summary

The Taiwanese semiconductor chip industry is under increased attack by CCP-linked Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) hacking groups. The hackers seek to expose vulnerabilities in the chip industry in Taiwan to extract manufacturing secrets and destabilise the wider industry. This would reduce the island nation’s position as a global leader. Taiwan’s production of half of the world’s chip supply gives it some economic leverage in a landscape of ever-shrinking diplomatic recognition. Still, increases in competitor states’ output are likely to erode that position in the coming years.
