Colombia: Guerrillas Surge with IEDs, Drones, Assassinations

Executive Summary

Colombia is facing an escalation in insurgent activity and terrorist attacks, driven primarily by guerrilla groups and paramilitary organisations that oppose the state. Incidents that include vehicle-borne-IED attacks and homemade drone strikes have significantly increased in comparison to the last year, as illegal armed groups and non-state actors exploit narcotics to expand their territory and grow their manpower.

Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) dissidents continue to pose the primary security threat to government officials and civilian targets. Among the critical incidents attributed to the guerrillas during the last twelve weeks are a terrorist attack on the Fidel Suárez Airbase and the political assassination of Miguel Uribe Turbay, as well as multiple coordinated strikes involving drones armed with mortar rounds.
