Fire from Above: The Impact of Ukraine’s Dragon Drones

On September 7, 2024, Ukrainian authorities released a video showing the deployment of “dragon drones” against Russian forces, introducing a modern twist on incendiary warfare. These drones drop thermite, a mixture of aluminium powder and iron oxide, thus burning at extremely high temperatures. This capability allows them to incinerate vegetation and enemy positions, stripping cover and posing significant threats to Russian troops. The drones’ fiery appearance earned them the nickname ‘dragon drones,’ as they resemble mythical dragons spewing fire. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian 60th Mechanised Brigade lauds these drones for their accuracy and strategic impact, branding them as instruments of vengeance. However, their use raised international concerns about the humanitarian and ethical implications of incendiary weapons, drawing scrutiny from global media and organisations.

Key Judgement-1: It is highly likely that the introduction of the dragon drones will have a severe psychological effect on Russian troops.

Key Judgement-2: These drones will likely alter both Russian and Ukrainian battle tactics.

Key Judgement-3: It is likely that the international community will condemn the use of these drones in battle.
