GPS Jammers: Trends in War and Crime

Executive Summary

GPS jammers were originally designed for military operations in which concealing a vehicle or airframe’s location was crucial to mission success. Decades after their invention, these jamming devices serve two purposes. One of these is the hindering of modern military operations. They are also affecting private aviation operations and commercial transport logistics.

Russia is waging sabotage in the Baltic through aviation jamming. 46,000 commercial aeroplanes were affected in Europe by this phenomenon in 2024. More seriously, however, 1,600 serious incidents were recorded in a single period of two days. The Middle East is also emerging as a hotspot for electronic warfare through signal spoofing, with the Israeli Military actively engaging in deliberate interference in Palestinian and Lebanese airspace.

Alongside covert operations and electronic warfare, signal jamming has arrived to stay in another field. it is being used by the criminal networks dedicated to cargo theft in North America. Northern Mexico and the United States are currently warning about the spread of a tradecraft that is generating economic losses equivalent to 0.5% of Mexico’s Gross Domestic Product.
