NGA Takes GEOINT Public: So What?

Executive Summary

In order to improve national security operations, the U.S. National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) is adopting commercial space technology and undergoing a strategic change in how it obtains and applies geospatial intelligence (GEOINT). A USD $200 million Luno B contract was announced by the NGA on 15 January 2025, and 13 businesses were chosen to supply commercial satellite imagery and analytics. This comes after the September USD $290 million Luno A contract, which highlights the Department of Defense’s growing dependence on commercial GEOINT. The NGA’s decision to take GEOINT public is a reflection of larger shifts in military operations and intelligence gathering. New opportunities notwithstanding, it also poses difficulties that will influence operational and policy choices in the future.
