On Wednesday the 7th of December 2022, Peruvian President Pedro Castillo tried to dissolve his country’s congress and rule by decree, carrying a “self-coup”. Consequently, with his political allies abandoned, Peru’s congress impeached him, followed by his arrest.
Because of this, the now-former president’s quick demise extends a recent period of instability in Peruvian politics. Indeed, the South American country suffered years of political turmoil, highlighted by the fact that the recently chosen President Boluarte is the 5th President in slightly over two years. Further, Peruvian authorities have accused or convicted many of its recent predecessors of corruption.
