On April 15, 2023, fighting broke out in Sudan’s capital of Khartoum between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in a struggle for power over the country. The two sides were once aligned in their efforts to overthrow longtime leader Omar al-Bashir in 2019 and orchestrate a coup in 2021. The current fighting between the army and the RSF will not only dampen the hopes of the Sudanese people of moving away from autocratic regimes but also threatens to destabilize the region.
