On July 27, 2023, leaders from African nations converged in St. Petersburg for meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The summit was intended for Russia and the African states to discuss areas of common concern. Those areas are primarily in energy cooperation, agribusiness, and mining investments. The summit came as Russia searched for allies as their struggles in the war in Ukraine continued.
