Ahmad Vahidi: New Hardline IRGC Chief Backfills War Loss

Executive Summary

Iran on 1 March appointed Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) veteran Ahmad Vahidi as Commander-In-Chief. Domestically known as one of the most repressive figures in Iran, Vahidi remains sanctioned by the European Union, designated by the U.S. Treasury, and is the subject of INTERPOL red notices going back to 2006.

This succession follows the killing of Vahidi’s predecessor, Mohammad Pakpour, on 28 February by an attack on Iran by the United States and Israel, a strike that also killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Amid the ongoing US-Israeli military campaign, his appointment likely reflects Tehran’s prioritisation of regime survival, signalling an intent to maintain a tough internal security posture.

On the other hand, his appointment underlines the IRGC’s prioritisation of institutional continuity. This is especially necessary following the killing of his predecessor and calls for a leadership change from the diaspora and international actors. Internally, Vahidi’s professional past and long-term loyalty will likely bring cohesion and coordination within an IRGC under fire.
