Catatumbo Flashpoint: Colombian Guerrillas at War Again

Colombia’s Catatumbo region’s security situation continues to deteriorate amid an internal guerrilla conflict that began five months ago. Despite ongoing ceasefire negotiations, the Revolutionary Forces of Colombia (FARC) and the National Liberation Army (ELN) show no signs of de-escalating their offensives against government forces and each other.

Clashes between the groups persist, with at least 119 fatalities and 56 injuries confirmed by official sources. Additionally, military leaders reported the deactivation of over 2,645 Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), many placed near main roads and public schools, indicating deliberate targeting of both critical infrastructure and civilian population.

ELN leadership in the past month announced a renewed offensive aimed at dislodging FARC presence in the region. Meanwhile, the FARC is reportedly using ceasefire negotiations to prepare a counteroffensive against the ELN. Among the preparations on both sides is the development of drone warfare capabilities, with seven attacks documented in the past two months.
