Executive Summary

During the 8-12 August timeframe, Russian forces achieved notable advances in the Pokrovsk sector, exploiting Ukrainian manpower gaps and a porous frontline through the employment of small diversionary reconnaissance and sabotage (DRG) units. These gains place key urban centres within the Donetsk “fortress belt” at increased risk, though territorial control remains unconfirmed and unfortified. 

Progress in Donetsk enhances Russia’s leverage ahead of prospective ceasefire negotiations during talks between U.S. President Trump and Russian President Putin on 15 August in Alaska. Since Donetsk is among the territories Moscow demands Ukraine abandons as a precondition for a ceasefire, these advances could shape the information environment in its favour.
