Sinaloa and the CJNG Cartels: Criminal Warfare in Mexico

Executive Summary

Violence by organised crime groups has plagued Mexico’s streets for decades. In fact, the conflict between the rival Sinaloa Cartel and Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) has had a significant impact across South America. However, the arrest of two high-ranking leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel in July has descended Mexico into further turmoil. So while Mexico’s two largest and most powerful cartels fight amongst themselves for turf and money, the newly elected Mexican government has important decisions to make if they want to regain any control of their nation.
