Islamic State Central Africa Province (ISCAP) became combined with al-Shabaab in Mozambique in 2019 (source). Since then, the groups have operated under a single operational structure, although reports indicate that they do sometimes act independently. Significantly, the al-Shabaab insurgency group in Mozambique grew from the religious group Ahlu Sunnah wal-Jamaa (ASWJ) (source). However, it is not to be confused with the Somali terrorist organisation of the same name. ASWJ became a militant organisation in 2015. Their main goals are to undermine the government’s military and combat foreign interests in the Cabo Delgado region of Mozambique. Cabo Delgado and the region of Nampula are particularly affected by jihadists affiliated with ISCAP-Mozambique.
