Can West Africa Meet Germany’s Energy Needs?

Germany is seeking energy partners in Africa since Russian gas stopped flowing through the Nordic Stream 2 and the invasion of Ukraine. Since the end of 2022, Germany has constructed new LNG terminals at Mukran and Brunsbuettel to import natural gas. Additionally, the war has pushed the country to look for renewable energy. For Germany, Africa holds the future to such dependence. Subsequently, this led to German security and energy development in West Africa and the Sahel.

Key Judgement 1: Germany is highly likely to increase bilateral ties with Mauritania over the next 12 months for renewable energy development.

Key Judgement 2: It is highly likely ECOWAS members will receive further German investments in security and energy over the next 12 months.
