Environmental Crime: Threat to Humans, Animals, Ecosystems

Executive Summary

We assess that environmental crime is a rising threat to human health, endangered wildlife species, and the environment. According to the FBI, environmental crime is the third largest criminal activity in the world, following drug and arms trafficking. It encompasses illegal activities such as illegal waste dumping, fishing, mining, and logging, as well as wildlife trafficking. Some environmental crimes, such as illegal waste exports, fuel secondary illicit activity, including money laundering, tax evasion, and fraud. Traditional international organized crime groups are diversifying into environmental crimes. [source]
