Houthi Disruption: Assessing Israel’s Attack on the Hodeidah Port

The Houthis, a Yemeni rebel group, have been in the spotlight for frequent attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea. Consequently, a coalition of Western countries has conducted aerial and naval strikes to hinder Houthis’ disruption of naval traffic. Houthi’s are established partners of the Iranian regime and have emphasized their rivalry with Israel due to the Gaza conflict. Strong supporters of Hamas, the Houthis have been attacking Israel since October 2023, demanding its withdrawal from Gaza. After a deadly strike on Tel Aviv on 20 July 2024, the IDF responded with “Operation Long Arm,” bombing the key port of Hodeidah, crucial for Houthis’ operations.

Key Judgment 1. The Israeli strike will highly likely disrupt humanitarian aid through Hodeidah, worsening the humanitarian crisis.

Key Judgment 2. It is unlikely that the strike on the port will significantly limit Houthi’s offensive capabilities.

Key Judgment 3. Israel will likely continue visible attacks to demonstrate its readiness for multi-front conflict.
