Somalia Crisis: Food Insecurity, Humanitarian Aid, and Dependence

Executive Summary

Somalia currently faces a humanitarian crisis, worsening due to continued droughts, conflicts, and food supply scarcity. Expert forecasts suggest over a million people will fall into crisis-level food insecurity in the next few months. The conditions are exacerbated by international humanitarian aid reductions, among which are the much-discussed cuts to USAID. Furthermore, Somalia is vulnerable to similar future crises due to reliance on food imports and low domestic production capacity. Vulnerable to economic, geopolitical, and security shocks, the crisis in Somalia will worsen, affecting millions, in the absence of increased and sustained aid.
