The national elections of 25 September 2022 represent a watershed in Italy’s history. Indeed, the landslide victory of “Fratelli d’Italia” (Brothers of Italy, FdI) brought for the first time a far-right party to the lead of the government coalition after the fall of fascism in 1943. Nevertheless, it is necessary to inscribe this result in a wider picture. The main factors that will shape Italy’s future are political polarisation, civic disaffection, economic difficulties, and international commitments and influences.
