South Sudan Crisis: Rising Tension and Humanitarian Emergency

Executive Summary

The situation in South Sudan, again brought to the forefront by reports of recent outbursts of violence, is complicated by international players’ involvement and is fueling a regional humanitarian crisis already driven by famine and a cholera outbreak. This report provides a brief overview of the challenges that lie ahead. Furthermore, it highlights the broader implications of the country’s unstable peace.

As background, the civil conflict of South Sudan ended in 2018 following the signing of a peace agreement between Salva Kiir’s South Sudan People’s Liberation Movement In Government (SPLM-IG) and Riek Machar’s Sudan People’s Liberation Movement In Opposition (SPLM-IO). Today, this already fragile peace is endangered by hostilities between the official national army and opposition armed forces.
