The Egyptian government is fighting a decade-long battle against extremist militants concentrated in the Sinai Peninsula. Both the Islamic State and al-Qaeda boast a considerable presence in the region. They also demonstrate a capacity to frustrate the government’s efforts at pacifying the area. To further inflame matters, Israel sees the restive region as a direct threat to its security and invests time and effort in mitigating the risk of cross-border infiltration accordingly.
