The Russian – D.R. Congo Military Cooperation Agreement

On 5 March, Russia’s government endorsed a military cooperation agreement draft with the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Initially, the DRC was sceptical and denied reports of entering into collaboration with Russia highlighting their caution in dealing with Russia. Due to concerns about sovereignty, security implications, and potential geopolitical consequences. Ultimately, the DRC entered into military cooperation with Russia which marks a significant development in bilateral relations between the two countries. The draft agreement encompasses joint military exercises, ship visits, combat aircraft operations, and military training initiatives.

Amidst growing global geopolitical shifts, Russia’s strategic interests in Africa have intensified. Moreover, the proposed military cooperation agreement signals a deepening of ties between Russia and the DRC.
