Amidst social and economic tensions, Senegal is undergoing a complex political crisis. Nevertheless, Senegal remains the democratic exception in a region marked by instability (source). Indeed, Dakar has lived through two peaceful transitions of power and no coups since achieving independence in 1960 (source). However, Senegal is experiencing its worst political crisis since 1988. Tensions between President Macky Sall and opposition leader Ousmane Sonko ahead of the February 2024 presidential elections have sparked violent clashes between security forces and PASTEF-Patriots supporters (source).
